Friends –

Each year since 1992, weve hosted the Peoples Thanksgiving as a place to honor organizations, individuals, and movements in struggle, in Chicago and nationally.

Organizations and movements we will honor this year will include:

United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2335

The members of Local 2335 who work at Lear Corporation carried out a successful walkout of over 700 workers in September to demand an end to the two-tier wage structure. The weakness of the national leadership allowed the company to create another plant with a low wage scale, but the Lear workers who struck won a victory that they are prepared to defend.

U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN)

This summer, Israel again launched a genocidal assault on the people of Gaza. In Chicago, the USPCN was the first community based organization in the street, and was at the front of the historic mass mobilizations.  Throughout this, USPCN continued as the main organization in the defense campaign for Rasmea Odeh.  We will recognize USPCN for its efforts on behalf of Palestine and Rasmea.

Caucus of Rank & File Educators (CORE)

This year, Chicagos teachers again took a stand against the corporate agenda in education. CORE led the Chicago Teachers Union to national recognition in their fight to curb standardized exams. CORE came into office in 2010 and, with Karen Lewis as their standard bearer, set into motion the transformation of CTU into the union that took on Mayor 1%.  (Of course, a round up of the year in Chicago wouldnt be complete without recognition of the inspiration that Karen provided in her bid for Mayor.)

Chicago Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression (CAARPR)

The uprising in Ferguson, Missouri that followed the police murder of Mike Brown brought the attention of the country to the oppression of African Americans. Chicago has also seen an epidemic of police crimes. CAARPR has put forward a plan for the struggle against the Chicago Police Department: a Civilian Police Accountability Council.
