USPCN is honored to announce the participation of Nakba survivor Nahil Oweida at our event this Thursday night, May 26th. This important figure in Palestinian history was born in the Jerusalem El-Baqa’a neighborhood in 1935. (El-Baqa’a is located in what is currently known as West Jerusalem, named when the Palestinian capital was partitioned by Israel after the 1967 occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem, and other Arab lands.)

In 1947, when she was 12, the British, who held a mandate over Palestine, closed the school she was enrolled in, and very soon thereafter, her family and she were exiled, along with close to 750,000 other Palestinians during the Nakba of 1947-48. Her family landed in Ramallah, and after finishing high school, she attended college in Damascus and later received a master’s degree from the American University of Beirut.  For over four decades, she has taught high school in Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.

Oweida is a co-founder of the General Union of Palestinian Women, the most important umbrella organization in Palestine’s women’s rights movement, and became an early member of its Administrative Council.  Currently, she is a researcher, writer, and journalist in both Arabic and English, and the author of many books, including “Women of Greater Syria” and a biography of Ibrahim Abu Dayya, the famous martyr of Palestinian self-defense.
