WHEN: Thursday, May 11, 2017, from 10 AM to 7 PM.  Press conference at 4 PM.

WHERE: Parking lot in front of 8527 S. Harlem Ave., Burbank, Illinois.

Hundreds of Palestinian community members and supporters will participate in a full-day hunger strike and encampment in Burbank, Illinois, on Thursday, May 11, in support of more than 1,500 Palestinian prisoners who have entered the fourth week of an open-ended hunger strike in Israeli prisons. Their basic, humanitarian demands include regular family visits, an end to solitary confinement, an end to administrative detention (imprisonment for months without charge), the strengthening of medical care, and access to education.

“The hunger strike by our sisters and brothers in Palestine has reached a dangerous stage,” said Bassem Kawar of USPCN-Chicago. “We are joining Palestinian organizations and solidarity groups around the world to heed the call of the Strike of Freedom and Dignity until all the prisoners’ demands are met.”

The encampment and solidarity hunger strike in Burbank will begin at 10 AM and end at 7 PM.  At the 4 PM press conference, an official solidarity statement will be read on behalf of U.S. Congressman Danny Davis; and confirmed speakers will include Jewish Voice for Peace-Chicago leader Lesley Williams, former U.S. political prisoner and current Field Organizer for the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR) Frank Chapman, Presbyterian minister and Friends of Sabeel-North American co-founder Reverend Dr. Don Wagner, Palestinian and other community leaders, and Chicago-based family members of Palestinian political prisoners and hunger strikers.

“We are hearing reports from Palestine that the Israeli Prison Service plans to enact harsher repression against the prisoners,” said Chapman, “including possible force feeding, which is a massive violation of international law, so we must also put pressure on our government to force Israel to end its crimes against the Palestinians.”
