One Million Tweets to #FreeOscarLopez
Today, on Oscar Lopez’ 73rd birthday, USPCN joins the National Puerto Rican Agenda and National Boricua Human Rights Network‘s (NBHRN’s) call for One Million Tweets For Oscar Lopez! The NBHRN has been a great friend to the Palestinian people in this country for decades, and when USPCN members were amongst 23 anti-war and Palestinian activists raided and subpoenaed by the FBI five years ago, the Puerto Rican community stood strongly by our side. In addition, NBHRN leader Dr. Jose Lopez (Oscar’s brother) gave the keynote address at the 8th Day Center for Justice’s luncheon honoring Rasmea Odeh about a year ago, where he addressed her directly with a message of support from Oscar in prison.
Today, January 6, 2016, NBHRN launches a social media campaign (Twitter and Facebook) calling for Oscar Lopez’ release from prison.
A Bronze Star-decorated Vietnam Veteran, Oscar has never been charged or convicted of a violent crime, yet has served 12 years in solitary confinement. The Archbishop of Puerto Rico, six Nobel Laureates, six Presidents of Latin American countries, all three major political tendencies in Puerto Rico, and six members of Congress have called for his release.
This call to action on January 6, his birthday and Three Kings’ Day, comes as President Barack Obama enters his last year in office and Oscar enters his 35th year of imprisonment – the Puerto Rican people’s longest-held political prisoner.
On this day, the National Boricua Human Rights Network is asking YOU to participate on Twitter and Facebook.
