Last year, on November 29^th, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed an upgraded U.N. status for the Palestinian Authority, despite intense opposition from the United States and Israel.

The resolution elevates Palestine’s status from “non-member observer entity” to “non-member observer state,” the same category as the Vatican.  The vote was 138 delegates in favor of the measure, nine against and 41 abstentions.

But what does this status actually mean for Palestinians in historical Palestine as well as those of us in the Diaspora?  Was this truly a victory for the Palestinian National Movement, or just a symbolic gesture that doesn’t win us any more rights than we have right now?

Join us on January 25^th, 2013, as we pose these questions and more to USPCN National Executive Committee member Monadel Herzallah, who attended the World Social Forum Free Palestine in Brazil last month, and USPCN-San Francisco chapter member and Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) leader Jackie Husary, who recently returned from working with Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
