Each year since 1992, we’ve hosted the People’s Thanksgiving as a place to honor organizations, individuals, and movements in struggle, in Chicago and nationally.

Our honored guests this year will include:
Newland Smith
Among faith based activists in Chicago, Newland is a figure that everyone knows and respects. This past year, in addition to his advocacy for peace and justice in the Episcopal Church, and his efforts in solidarity with Palestine, he has helped build the Anti-War Committee campaign to stop Boeing’s new killer drone.

Sarah Simmons
Sarah Simmons is a midwife and a mother, and her experience bringing new life into the world is a metaphor for her role in movement building. She is a link between the fight to defend public schools, as part of Parents 4 Teachers, and the resistance to war in her work with the Anti-War Committee.

Special guest:
Via Skype – Michael Sampson, Dream Defender
When George Zimmerman was acquitted for the racist murder of Trayvon Martin, African American students across Florida marched and sat in. We’ll hear from one of those who occupied the State Capitol in Tallahassee for 31 days to demand justice.

Finally, Chicago’s Palestinian community is rallying to defend Rasmea Odeh  from a politically motivated arrest and trial at the hands of Homeland Security and the U.S. Attorney’s office in Detroit. The People’s Thanksgiving will take up the task of fundraising for her defense.
