#FreeKhitamSaafin Social Media Storm

Join USPCN, Samidoun – Palestinian Political Prisoners Solidarity Network, National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR), and National Lawyers Guild (NLG) on Monday, November 16 at 10 AM PT / 12 PM CT / 1 PM ET / 8 PM in Palestine for a 2 hour social media storm to demand Israeli government release Palestinian feminist leader Khitam Saafin from jail!

Khitam Saafin, the president of the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees, was seized and arrested on November 2nd, 2020 from her home in Beitounia by the Israeli Occupation Forces and put in administrative detention for 6 months without charge or trial. Six other Palestinian activists and human rights defenders were also arrested on the same day.

According to a statement by Samidoun, “Administrative detention, a practice first  introduced to Palestine by the British colonial mandate, imprisons Palestinians without charge or trial on the basis of a so-called “secret file.” Even the detainee’s lawyer is denied access to any of the contents of this file; instead, it is simply asserted by the Israeli occupation military commander. These detention orders are issued for up to six months at a time and are indefinitely renewable; Palestinians routinely spend years at a time jailed under administrative detention. There are currently approximately 370 Palestinian prisoners held under administrative detention orders, among approximately 4500 Palestinian political prisoners in total.”

The detention of Khitam and others comes days after political prisoner Maher Al-Akhras won a release deal by the Israeli military after 103 days of hunger strike.

Israel’s detention and imprisonment of Palestinian activists and leaders is a way to silence those who oppose Israel’s daily human rights violations, occupation, land theft, and ethnic cleansing.
